New carpet costs more than the price on the label. You pay for the carpet by the square yard or square metre, plus underlay, gripper, door bars and fitting, and the shape of the room decides how much carpet you need to buy. At our carpet and flooring shop in Chorley, carpets start from £6.99 per square yard (about £8.36 per m²). Here’s how to work out a realistic total before you get a quote.
Carpet and flooring prices at a glance
| Floor | Our starting price | Per m² | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carpet | £6.99 per sq yd | about £8.36 | Lounges, bedrooms, landings |

These are starting prices. The range you choose, from a hard-wearing twist to a soft saxony or a wool blend, sets the final price.
Why carpet is priced per square yard
Carpet comes off a roll, and many UK carpet shops still price rolls in square yards. One square yard is about 0.84 m². To turn a price per square yard into a price per square metre, multiply it by 1.2. So £6.99 per square yard works out at about £8.36 per m². Laminate and LVT are sold in packs, so they’re priced by the square metre.
Roll widths: why you buy more than your floor area
Carpet comes in fixed roll widths, usually 4 m or 5 m. You buy a full width, even if your room is narrower, and the fitter trims the rest. That’s why two rooms with the same floor area can need different amounts of carpet.
| Room | Room size | Carpet you buy | Carpet cost at £6.99 per sq yd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | 3.5 m × 3.2 m | 4 m × 3.2 m = 12.8 m² (15.3 sq yd) | about £107 |
| Lounge | 4.5 m × 5.2 m | 5 m × 5.2 m = 26 m² (31.1 sq yd) | about £217 |
These figures are for the carpet only, at our starting price. Underlay, gripper, door bars and fitting are listed separately on your quote. A good fitter plans the joins and the direction of the pile so you buy as little extra as possible. That’s why we measure every room for free before we price it.
What else goes on a carpet quote?
A fair quote lists every item, so you can compare shops properly:
- Underlay. It makes the carpet softer, warmer and quieter, and helps it last longer.
- Gripper. The strips around the edge of the room that hold the carpet tight.
- Door bars. A neat, safe edge where the carpet meets another floor.
- Fitting. Stretching, trimming and finishing the carpet.
- Floor preparation. Any work the floor needs before the carpet goes down.
- Uplift and disposal. Taking up and removing your old carpet.
If one quote looks much cheaper than another, check what has been left off. For the other things to check before you buy, read how to choose a good carpet shop.
Stairs and landings
Stairs are priced per flight, not per square metre. Every step and nosing is fitted by hand, and straight flights, winders and landings all take different amounts of carpet and time. See our stair carpets and runners page for the options.

Frequently asked questions
How much is carpet per square metre?
Our carpets start from £6.99 per square yard, which is about £8.36 per square metre. The range you choose sets the final price.
Is underlay included in the carpet price?
No. Underlay is listed separately on your quote, along with gripper, door bars and fitting, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.
Why do I have to buy more carpet than my room size?
Carpet comes in fixed roll widths, usually 4 m or 5 m. If your room is 3.5 m wide, you still buy a 4 m width and the fitter trims the rest. Careful planning of the joins keeps the extra to a minimum.
