Is laminate right for you?

Is Laminate Flooring Right for Your Home?

Laminate suits most rooms in most Chorley homes. It gives you the look of a wood floor for less, and a good board stands up to family life. Here is the honest picture.

Why People Choose It

  • Price: the wood look for less than real wood or most LVT
  • Hard-wearing: an AC4 board resists scratches and scuffs
  • Easy to clean: sweep, then a damp (not wet) mop
  • Allergy-friendly: no fibres to hold dust or pet hair
  • Lots of looks: oak, grey, stone-effect and herringbone

Where It Is Not the Best Fit

  • Wet rooms: laminate is not waterproof, so bathrooms suit LVT better
  • Noise: it is firmer underfoot, so upstairs rooms need acoustic underlay
  • Repairs: a damaged board is replaced, not sanded like real wood

What Changes the Price of a Laminate Floor

  • 1
The boardThickness (usually 7–12mm), wear rating (AC3–AC5) and water resistance.
  • 2
The patternHerringbone is laid board by board, so it takes longer to fit than standard planks.
  • 3
The underlayStandard, acoustic for upstairs rooms, or one suited to underfloor heating.
  • 4
Your subfloorLoose boards, dips or a damp concrete floor need putting right first.
  • 5
The roomBay windows, chimney breasts, pipes and doorways all mean more cutting.
  • 6
The old floorOld carpet, laminate or tiles need lifting before the new floor goes down.

A price per square metre means little until someone has looked at the floor. Checking it first is how you avoid a second bill on fitting day.

How it’s done properly

Laminate Flooring Installation, Step by Step

Most laminate problems come from the fitting, not the board: boards that lift and peak, gaps that open in winter, a hollow, bouncy feel, or edges swelling by the kitchen door. This is what a proper installation involves.

Measure and Floor Check

Every room is measured and the subfloor checked for level, loose boards and damp. Laminate floats, so it needs a flat, firm, dry base.

Subfloor Preparation

Floorboards are screwed down so they don’t creak. Concrete gets a damp-proof membrane. A new screed needs drying time: roughly a day per millimetre for the first 40mm.

Acclimatising the Boards

Laminate moves with temperature and humidity, so manufacturers usually ask for the packs to settle in the room for 24–48 hours.

The Right Underlay

Acoustic underlay upstairs and in flats, a vapour barrier over concrete, and a low-tog underlay over underfloor heating.

Expansion Gap

A gap of around 8–10mm at every wall, pipe and door frame lets the floor move. Boards fitted tight to the wall are what lifts and peaks.

Edges and Doorways

The gap is hidden with beading, scotia or by fitting under the skirting, with the right threshold bar where the floor meets carpet, tiles or LVT.

Final Check

Joints, trims and doorways are checked over, the room is left tidy, and you get advice on looking after your new floor.

Laminate flooring for kitchens

Laminate Flooring for Kitchens: Will It Work?

Yes, in most kitchens, if you choose a water-resistant board and it is fitted properly. Laminate has a wood-fibre (HDF) core, so water left sitting on the joints can make the edges swell. The laminate standard, EN 13329, covers domestic kitchens but not rooms that get wet often.

What Makes Laminate Work in a Kitchen

  • A water-resistant board. Rated to handle surface spills for a set time. AGT’s Natura Line, for example, is rated for 24 hours.
  • AC4 or higher. Copes with the traffic in a busy kitchen-diner.
  • Careful edges. An expansion gap behind the kickboards and a proper threshold into the hall.
  • Quick wiping. Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof.
When LVT is the better choice: bathrooms and en-suites, utility rooms with a washing machine, and kitchens with a history of leaks. LVT has a PVC core, so water will not make it swell. We bring laminate and LVT samples to your free measure, so you can compare them on your own floor.

Choosing your laminate

Find the Right Laminate for Each Room

Two ratings on the pack tell you how tough a laminate is. Both come from the European standard EN 13329: the AC rating (AC1–AC6) measures surface wear, and the use class shows where it can go, with 2x meaning domestic and 3x commercial.

Our everyday pick: an 8mm, AC4, water-resistant board covers every downstairs room in most Chorley homes, hallway and kitchen included. The North West is one of the wetter parts of England, and after a walk round Yarrow Valley or Astley Park the hall takes the mud. A doormat inside the door catches the grit that dulls laminate fastest.

I’m genuinely really pleased with the service I received from Hamza, Sabi and Shankar, and I’d happily recommend them to anyone looking to have new flooring fitted. From the very beginning, Hamza was extremely helpful and easy to deal with. He came out the same day to measure the space and provide a quotation, which I really appreciated. He also brought a good range of samples with him, so I was able to look at the different options properly in the room rather than trying to make a decision from pictures online. There was no pressure at all, and he took the time to answer my questions and make sure I was happy with the choice. Another big positive was that the uplift and removal of the existing carpeting was included at no extra cost. That made the whole process much easier and saved me the hassle of having to arrange it separately. Communication with Hamza throughout was straightforward and reliable, and everything happened as discussed. Sabi and Shankar then carried out the fitting and did a fantastic job. They professionally prepared the sub-floor before installing the Herringbone Karndean LVT, which was important to me because I wanted the flooring to be fitted properly rather than rushed. The herringbone pattern has been laid beautifully and the overall finish looks really clean, neat and professional. You can tell they took pride in the work and paid attention to the smaller details. Considering the quality of the flooring, the preparation involved and the standard of workmanship, I also thought the price was very reasonable. Overall, it was a very smooth experience from the initial measurement and quotation right through to the final installation. I’m really happy with how the floor has turned out and very appreciative of the work the whole team put in. A big thank you to Hamza, Sabi and Shankar. I would definitely use them again in the future and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to friends and family.

Laminate Flooring FAQs

Laminate flooring in Chorley starts from £15.99 per m². Your total depends on the board, the underlay and any floor preparation, and you get a full quotation within 24 hours of your free home measure.

Yes. Choose a water-resistant laminate with an AC4 wear rating, make sure it is fitted with proper expansion gaps, and wipe up spills promptly. For bathrooms, utility rooms or kitchens prone to leaks, LVT is the better choice because it is waterproof.

No. Laminate has a wood-fibre core. Water-resistant laminate is designed to cope with surface spills for a limited time (some ranges are rated for 24 hours), but standing water can make the edges swell.

It is the wear rating from the European laminate standard EN 13329, running from AC1 (light use) to AC6 (very heavy use). For most homes, AC4 is tough enough for every room, including hallways and kitchens.

Yes. Underlay evens out small dips, reduces noise and adds warmth. Over a concrete floor you also need a vapour barrier, and some boards come with underlay already attached.

Many laminates can. Check the board is rated for underfloor heating, use a suitable low-tog underlay, and keep the floor surface no hotter than the manufacturer’s limit, which is typically 27°C.

Often, if the existing floor is solid, level and dry, such as old vinyl or a sound timber floor. Carpet always has to come up first. The floor is checked at your free home measure.

As a guide, a standard single room is often fitted within a day. Larger areas, rooms with lots of doorways and herringbone patterns take longer, and floors that need preparation first add time.

Yes. Herringbone is laid board by board in a zigzag pattern, so it takes longer than standard planks and is priced to reflect that. You can see herringbone laminate we have fitted on this page.

Most laminate manufacturers advise against steam mops, because they force heat and moisture into the joints. Use a vacuum or brush, then a well wrung-out damp mop.

Our recent laminate jobs include AGT, Natura and Mood XL boards, along with herringbone and stone-effect laminate. Visit our Steeley Lane showroom, or we will bring samples to your free home measure.

Yes. Laminate warranties come from the manufacturer, and their length depends on the range. The AGT parquet laminate we’ve fitted is backed by up to a 20-year warranty. We’ll tell you the warranty for the board you choose before you order.
